BASEBALL HALL OF FAME/COOPERSTOWN, NY

One of the things that has been on my bucket list is to someday visit the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.  Well, can you hear me checking that off my list?  When Mr. W started planning this trip, I asked him to somehow include the HOF and he did.  I am so glad.

Cooperstown is a cool little town.  The downtown area is styled and looks a lot like a town back in the 1930s would look.  There are many shops up and down main street.  You can find anything from bats, to jerseys, to hats, to baseballs and baseball cards.  Just about anything that has to do with baseball is there.

We bought our tickets at the HOF and went in.  The first thing they encourage you to do is watch a movie about the HOF and experiences of baseball in which players and former players talk about the game.  It is the PERFECT thing to see to set the stage for your tour.

I was raised in a baseball loving family.  You either got on board with that or you spent a lot of time reading or something.  We had one TV and my Dad was in charge of the TV.  I remember many Saturdays with my Dad watching a game on TV and listening to another game on his transistor radio through an ear plug.

When my Dad was a young man, he played quite a bit of baseball.  One day, a scout with the Red Legs (what is now the Cincinnati Reds) was in town and saw my Dad play.  He approached my Dad after the game and asked him to come play for the team. My Dad's Dad would not allow it because he needed him to stay home and work on the farm.  Telling that story always made my Dad sort of sad.  It would have been his dream come true.

Anyway, I learned to love the game and have been a follower of the Astros since they were the Colt 45s.  It was great to see displays and facts about all the old, original players like Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Cy Young, and Lou Gehrig.  But, it also made me feel a certain pride when I read about Astros that were record holders and those that had placques there.  It was almost like a reverence happening in that place.

One of the cool things was everyone there had on their favorite team's jersey or hat or something.  You found yourself starting conversations with total strangers, but they were people with the same love for baseball.  It was pretty awesome.

I also had a new grandbaby the same day!  I'd say that your day can't get much better than that!

We stayed in a park right outside of Cooperstown that is a state park.  The name is Glimmerglass State Park. The people were very nice there.  The park is really very nice and very pretty.  However, they only have 30 amp electric.  There is no water and no sewer.  There is a station you can fill your rig with water when you enter and they have a dump station for when you leave.  They also do not any AT&T service.  Verizon works, but not AT&T.  Zero, nadda, nothing.  Daughter had gone into labor the first day we arrived and because of no phone service, we had to go into town and rent a hotel room for the night.  So, be forewarned if you are in the area.
