Well, after 28 years in education, the day finally came. June 27, 2013 is a day that will go down in history.........well, maybe not everyone's history, but definitely in mine. June 27th was my last day at work. Doesn't that have a good ring to it? LAST DAY AT WORK........From now on, every day will be Saturday. I have had my retired friends tell me everything from you will never know what day it is anymore to you will be so busy that you will wonder how you ever had time to work. Well, I'm looking forward to finding out what this thing called retirement is all about.
Now for you that know me, I can't just go out quietly. Nope, not me. So, on my last day, I'm cleaning off my desk, saying good-byes to all my precious friends at work, planning where I'm going to lunch with some of my lunch friends......you know, all the important things you do on your last day. Then, I decide that I really need to take some mail to the mail room and check to make sure we didn't have any mail waiting for us. You know, be a responsible, at least semi-working employee. So, I start walking down the very slick, smooth hallway when, you guessed it, I fell. It couldn't be a dainty, inconspicuous fall. It was a BOOM! Our precious custodian, came running and told me that she knew someone had fallen because she HEARD IT FROM 2 HALLWAYS AWAY! OMG! I think I must have made the building shake! I think people are probably going to evacuate the building because of threat of an earthquake! Of course, then word starts spreading like wildfire and people start appearing out of every nook and cranny.
I would have gotten up but my ankle hurt. Not bad enough that I think it is broken but bad enough that I couldn't jump right back up before witnesses appeared. So, of course, the first thing someone says is, "Go get Ann (our workers' comp director)." I'm thinking, NNNNOOOOO, this is going to mess up my lunch plans and the rest of my last day! But too late......Here comes Ann AND she has the evac chair to add insult to injury.
So, I end up at the care clinic, getting an x-ray (no broken bones), getting my very sore and swollen ankle wrapped, and NOT being able to go to lunch with my friends. Bummer.
When they called Mr. W to tell him what I had done and that he will have to come get me. He was not shocked. I have worked in 3 different school districts in my career and I have had at least 1 workers' comp accident in each one. Did I tell you that my middle name is Klutz? If you want to keep your workers' comp incidents down, don't hire me. :) He was just trying to figure out how he was going to get me up the steps of the RV with a hurt ankle with his hurt back. (Yep, he hurt his back by picking up and moving all the packed boxed and some furniture.) Do we all of a sudden sound old? Luckily, it didn't come to that.
Remember the aforementioned custodian? Well after she figured out that I was OK, she started taking pics! I'm not sure if she wanted me to have them for my blog or she wanted to have them for everyone to have a good laugh after I was gone! :)
At least I got to leave early.

I am pretty sure this is not what you had in mind for "going out in style." Your story will be told for years to come to people on their last day of work. Hope the ankle is better!
