About 10 years ago, Mr. W and I decided we would sell our home and most of our belongings and move into our RV when we retired. We knew several people who had done this, my in-laws had done this, it sounded like what we wanted to do with retirement and really like quite a normal thing. Little did I know the reaction I would receive when I started sharing with people my plans for retirement! I was not someone who was wealthy or who had a home full of very valuable belongings. We did have everything we needed and God had blessed us with a nice home full of nice "things." So, I was a little surprised by some of the reactions I received. Here's how the conversation usually went.
Me: "Well, when we retire we are going to move into our RV and travel around the USA."
Others (Just a few of their reactions): "You are going to do what?" "You're joking, right?" "But you won't have a house...." "Oohhh." "Seriously?" "But, you will be in a....well you know.....a trailer." "You are going to live in that little space?" "How will all of your stuff fit in an RV?" (To that, I wanted to say, "Seriously?") "Only crazy people do something like that..."
It got to the point that I wouldn't tell people what my plans were because I didn't want to have defend them or reassure others that I really was going to be alright. However, once we started selling stuff out of our home and people started coming over to pick up their purchases, the reactions started all over again.
It has actually become kind of funny to see their reactions and to see them trying desperately to say something kind and enthusiastic for our plan. So much so, I thought I needed to start off my blog with letting people know, I am moving into an RV and I'm going to be fine.
So, only 22 more days til official retirement and then we can get this party started!
