EVERYBODY'S GONE SURFIN'.........SURFIN' USA

I know you have heard me say over and over again that Mr. W likes the beach.  Well, not only does he like the beach, he likes to surf.  I have carried a 9ft. 6in. surfboard strapped to the ladder on the back of the 5W all across the country in hopes of him looking at the ocean and saying Surf's Up!

He has been moaning and groaning that there has been no surf and having people send him pics of how good the surf has been in Texas! But, today was different. Surf was up.  So, I get up early and go with him so I can get a shot of him riding the perfect wave.

Once we get to the beach and park, we walk down to the beach.  I'm carrying the beach umbrella, a chair, and my camera.  Mr. W is carrying a chair, a backpack, and his very long surfboard. You have to walk through the parking lot, up an incline that "Y"s and one way continues up to a fishing pier and the other way goes down wooden steps to the beach and under the pier.  He stands there for several minutes trying to decide whether he should surf right of the pier or left of the pier.  I'm thinking, "What difference does it make? Make a decision so we can put this stuff down."

Finally, we go left of the pier.  He sets up the umbrella.  I set up the chairs. He gets ready to pull his surfboard out its bag and ut-oh. The wax for his board is in the truck in the parking lot.  So, he runs back to the truck to get the wax.  While he is gone, I take some pics of the surf.

Nice waves, right?

Ok, now he has the wax.  He takes the surfboard out of the bag, waxes down the board, puts on his wetsuit, and starts out into the water.  Oops! He forgot his surfboard leash. Can't go out in the ocean without your surfboard leash around your ankle.  You don't want to have to swim to shore every time you fall off of your surfboard. Guess where it is.  Yep, it's in the truck.  Dang it! So, Mr. W makes another trip to the truck.  Can you tell it has been awhile since he has been surfing?

OK, surfboard waxed - check; leash on - check; photographer wife has camera ready - check; time to go surfing.

Sitting and waiting for the swells to come in.

And here he goes.........

Pretty good for an old guy.

He came in after that ride.  He told me not to tell you that he was in the water for over an hour "waiting" for that perfect wave! Oops, I told you. It will have to stay our secret. OK?  :)
There were a lot of guys out surfing.  I kept noticing that wherever Mr. W paddled to, several of the younger guys paddled to. I'm not sure if they were getting close enough to make sure that they weren't seeing things when they saw this old guy out there or if Mr. W was paddling out to all the good places.  He was definitely the "senior" surfer out there.  :) What a guy!

Surf is suppose to be up again tomorrow.  He plans to get up early and go again.  He will be going by himself. :)

  1. I'm sure it's because they could tell he knew what he was doing! For an old guy. ;)
